***Flygirl Fridays***

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to take a course called "Flying Lessons" given by a very talented artist - Kelly Rae Roberts. It was an excellent course that covered such topics as letting go of yours fears, going after your true passion, and many other things. One of the best things about the course was, I got meet and learn about a lot of talented artists, all in on different paths, but all working towards making their dreams come true and learning to take flight. Flygirl Fridays is all about these wonderfully talented people and a little bit about them, so you can get to know them as well!

Linda Kay Kinnaman of Linda Kay’s Art!
Please introduce yourself, who are you and what do you do?
I am Linda Kay Kinnaman of Linda Kay’s Art. I am a mixed media collage artist that likes to create with acrylic paints, recycled papers and goods to create beautiful artwork. I also like to make “Green Jewelry” charm bracelets from old jewelry and unusual items. And I like to make Tunisian Crochet scarves in the winter.

What is something that you really love, and why?
I really love painting! My earliest memories of painting are when I was very young, about 5 or so, sitting in my parent’s breezeway and painting with watercolors on the edges of my Mother’s airmail stationary for her pen pal in South Africa. I just love the ability of moving and manipulating color to create something I’ve dreamed of in my head.
What would your dream project be?
Oh, that is a good question! I would most like to teach others how to use recyclable materials to create beautiful works of art for themselves. There is such a wealth of materials available to us for little or no cost that we could use to re-purpose into beautiful and useful things. We would also do so much to help keep our beautiful Earth a clean and healthy place to live.

What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve ever received?
My favorite art teacher in collage, Mr. Harold Zisla, told me “If you want to make an impact with your artwork, do what you know.” Playing in experimental methods and techniques should be explored and researched, but save that for a time when your work really doesn’t matter. You can perfect these methods and then incorporate them into your important work. This is significant to me because it allows me to put my best work forward and it also allows me time to play and be free to experiment, a real gift from an admired mentor.
Where does you inspiration come from?
I get inspired by many things. It could be an object that speaks to me, a photo or movie that suggests a theme or piece to work on, or an experience I have had. It most often will come from a very vivid dream that I have had and cause me to get up, rush down to the studio and get it onto paper or canvas as quickly as I can before I lose the thought.

What do you think is the biggest thing holding you back?
That is most definitely my own fear ~ I have many talents and skills, but when it comes to putting my work and myself out into the public, I get stage fright that paralyzes me. My drive to create is huge and it helps to push me out where I have to interact with others so that they can see my work. What is the point of creating so much art if no one can see it, right? When I do brave up and get my work out for others to see, then I relax and enjoy the experience. Sharing is the most rewarding part of what I do. It reaches out and connects with others in a way that only art can do.
What change do you think would most help your business grow?
I could use a lot more time in my day and a bit more organized space to work in. I have a very full plate with family, another business I help run and my own creative art business. I think there should be another day added to the week just so I can get more done! It should be named “Do-day!”

What’s the biggest thing that you took with you from Flying Lessons?
The biggest lesson I took from Flying Lessons is that if I follow my heart, I can achieve my dreams in my business. I have to believe I can do the things I dream about in order for them to happen. It is about having confidence and being brave. I also love the community we build from taking this course. Having so many liked minds to connect with, support each other, help each other and get to know as real friends is the best thing that has happened to me in a very long time. I have so much to be thankful for from taking this course.
